It is with reluctance that I write a quick warning against James Van Praagh and his attractively packaged book of deception Looking Beyond: A Teen’s Guide to the Spiritual World.
Van Praagh openly admits to being a medium and a spiritualist who contacts the dead. Here are some clear warnings from the Bible regarding mediums and spiritists:
Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. (Leviticus 19:31)
I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people. (Leviticus 20:6)
A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads. (Leviticus 20:27)
When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. (Deuteronomy 18:9-13)
Clearly, God is against mediums and spiritists! We need to guard ourselves against such people, just as we wash our hands before eating to guard ourselves against bacteria and viruses. James Van Praagh is a medium, one who claims to contact the spirits of the dead, and as such, acts as an open door to “infection” with evil spirits. Evil spirits are similar to pathogenic bacteria and viruses: they are all around, but cannot harm you if you do the right thing. In the case of bacteria and viruses, the right thing to do is observe hygiene rules. In the case of evil spirits, the right thing to do is to obey God’s moral laws. Avoiding mediums and spiritists, like avoiding something dirty and infested with pathogenic bacteria, is one of the things we need to do to keep clean and free from evil spirit infections.
One of the things Van Praagh teaches in his book is that you can have “spirit guides” come in and guide you in living your life. Just to let you know, in case it isn’t obvious these “spirit guides” are actually evil spirits that will disguise themselves as being good at first, but as they worm their way deeper and deeper into your heart and mind and gain control of you, the gloves will be off and you will be in for some major torment! If you find yourself in this situation, cry out to Jesus to come and rescue you. Turn completely away from this evil and Jesus will come and set you free. However, if Jesus sets you free and you then choose to continue doing your own thing and ignoring Jesus, you will find yourself much worse off when the evil spirit returns with seven more even worse than itself. You can either serve Jesus or you can serve the devil. There isn’t really any middle ground, especially not once you invite the devil in.
Recommended reading: The Bondage Breaker by Neil Anderson clearly explains how to escape the torment of the devil and be set completely free through Jesus.
